building first comp! hel please!

hello! i am a COMPLETE n00b when it comes to computers. ok!

im getting a comp a little less than 1500 soon...and im pretty sure i can put it together. but my question is...what is all of this talk about bios and whatnot? what do those do? and drivers? what are those? when i set my comp up, what are the main things i am going to have to do to get it going? other than plugging it on and hitting the on switch... i SHOULD be able to do that

you sound like someone who shouldn't be doing this yet. you should read up. your best friend can be google doing something like this. the bios i think comes with the motherboard you order. with 1500 you can get an AMD 939 socket processor, 1 gig of pc3200 ram, a 6800, a nice case, and a 100gig hard drive. plus a dvdrw. make sure you rtfm (read the f&^$ing manual). drivers are included with everything you get. windows recognizes the hardware and can install the product. then once you have done that, the manufacturers website always has drivers you can install with quick and easy to read instructions. it's very simple. the only drivers though that are really important are for your video card. dont forget security software and the os too. they can add up to about 200$

and im not about to spend more for an already put together computer that has nothing that i want in it

If you go to http://www.mwave.com/mwave/Barebones.hmx? you can customize a barebone system of your choice. I've been planning on building my first comp for awhile now, and still might, but since stumbling upon that...I might just do that instead.

They don't build a full comp, but assemble and test most of what you would need except for a standalone psu (power supply), hard drive, 2nd+ optical drive(s), keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. Their choices of components is limited somewhat, but they do give a good selection to choose from. Their cost for doing this is $0, just the price of the components themselves...which aren't much higher than newegg's or directron's parts.

I think for $79, they will build you a full system from any and all components on their site (basically anything you would want). While that would not be for me...for yourself it might be great. It still would be MUCH cheaper than anything you could ever find at a retail store. At any rate, I would definitely check this out. Good luck with your new system
