Default error message: invalid system disk...blah blah blah

Does anyone know where I can download EZBios (free- of course). A friend dropped off her gateway and thinks her hard drive is shot..when I power it up, it displays the error message: invalid system disk....remove disk and strike any key.....but there is not a disk in the unit!! I tried switching cables and got a message: No OS found...what the he@@ ? I don't think that she knows enough to fry her hard drive unless it happened without her knowledge...(her kids maybe)...and I know enough to be dangerous and really screw it up!!! seriously though, isn't there some way to get past this without replacing the hard drive? I have tried bootdisk.com and nothing has worked yet so..as we speak the hard drive is in the freezer...literally...I figured at this point, it probably can't hurt and I have read several different posts that this might just do the trick..whatever that may be...at any rate, anyone know of something simple I might try???
Thanks for your time!
