Download accelerator plus, JetCar, massdownloader.. these tools attempt to download in parallel, by requesting different parts of the same file. On some servers, where you are faster than the server, these may provide a boost. On the other hand, they may just annoy the admins and cause them to take counter-measures. Download speed is often limited per user for a reason: to provide equitable performance to all... or, it is simply as fast as the server can go right now, so parallel requests will not help you.
Web browser accelerators, for example the ones listed here, try to pre-load links in case you might visit them, and are not recommended. Our site, for example, will refuse to serve a stream of requests for pages faster than one person could possibly read and other sites will or already do take similar action, causing you mysterious blank pages and errors.. by using a browser accelerator you are punishing the sites that provide you information. (From www.dslreports.com) Basically, some will work if the site allows them, other times you could get "banned" from ever downloading again if they notice you are using up all there bandwidth. I don't use any.

There isnt exactly a best download manager considering the fact that they all do they same thing. Yes, they may repair broken links, but thats besides the point. I had a download manager a little while ago. Here's the direct link to it. Download Manager It worked pretty well for me until i found mozilla. Mozilla has the best integrated download manager in my opinion. But, try that, it should be of good use to you.
