Question What is the best free Anti-Virus program?

What is the best free Anti-Virus program?
I just formatted friends hard drive, it was beyond repair! (Norton found about 260 infection and M$ Anti-Spy-ware Beta1 found about 120 spy-ware infection).

Avast or AVG would be ok. My vote would go to Avast; it updates itself and the virus defs automatically, and scans all incoming mail.
Plus it has a cool interface.

In 2 recent testings, Antivir performed much better than the other free programs, but all were well below the top paid for ones. But Antivir did outperform a few paid antiviruses.
