Or you could google "split avi" and come up with a site like this http://www.bobyte.com/
Search engines are your friend

EDIT: Hope this is what you're looking for

Copy a clip from the TV to a miniDV camcorder, then transfer it to the computer. If you have a camera capable of doing that it works great.

What do you mean by a movie? A DVD? A movie playing on TV? Another media format (ie .mov, .wmv etc)?

Its not that hard to do at all,, Below are the programs you need..

1) DVD Decrypter (to first copy the movie to your HD)
2a) AutoGK (To Rip the movie into Divx format)* (optional)
2b) WinAVi converter (to convert either .VOB (DVD movie file) or .XVID(created by AutoGK) to .WMV or .AVI format.
3) Nero, Roxio or even Windows Movie Maker - Use your .WMV or .AVI file that you just made using Winavi and any of these programs will let you edit, cut, add the scenes of your choice.

AutoGK is an extra step that you don't really need to use. but sometime you may want to use it, just because sometime WinAVi converter does not convert .VOB (DVD movie file) correctly as an .WMV format or .AVI.. In that case u use AutoGK to convert the .VOB file to .XVID format then use Winavi converter to convert .XVID to .WMV or .AVI format..

Good thing about using DVD Decrypter is that it let you split the DVD movie into smaller DVD movie files. You can actually select exactly where you want the files to split,, so If the scene you want is in very beginning then You can set the file split option to let say 700MB. so after DVD Decrypter is done copying DVD movie into your HD,, you'll see each of the .VOB file is 700MB in size.
Then You can use DVD player software and play each .VOB file to check exactly which file contains the scene you want and then convert only that file to .WMV or .AVI to edit.. This way you'll save time and be able to do video editing quicker...

I hope that helps. Its not in very much detail but will help you to get started.
Good luck..

Thanks for help, but i never intended to rip dvd movies, i meant to rip a specific scene off a avi file already on my computer and save as avi, not wmv (eg:window movie maker) and so i can toss the rest movie file away for more harddrive space!
