Default wireless router problems

just bought my first laptop and tried to set it up on a wireless router. everything worked fine at first but after i shut my laptop off for a few hours and then tried to get back on the net it said web page was unavailable.(on every website i typed in) wireless connection showed an excellent connection at 54mbps but no web pages could be brought up. reconfigured router and it worked for about 20 minutes but then the same thing. tech supprt for the router wasn't much help. they had me try a few things but it didn't work so they said it was a problem with my laptop or service provider. they said it was probably firewalls, but it works fine with a direct connection.
could this really be the problem or should i try a new router?

I'd take the router back and try a new one. It sounds like the wireless portion of the router is just getting confused after a while and shuts off the internet.
