faster and faster

I can remember a time when newer and faster CPU's came out every few months or so and ecah time it made big news. Has that trend stopped? Have we reached a point where cpu speed is fast enough and we are all satisfied?

The emphasis now is on dual cores rather than the frequency of the processor. That's why you do not have processors going up in speed dramatically now.

I still don't like duel core...I guess it'll kick in soon enough, but untill it's truely utilized, it's more of a waste IMO.

See, I used a duel processor video editor back in high school. Get this, someone swipped one of the processors. The darn thing still worked just fine, probably BETTER running in single processor mode. Now it needed both processors for some of the realtime rendering capabilities it had but for the basic capture/edit stuff, 1 processor did the best. Hehe, oh, and the teacher was quite pissed when he realized a processor was missing ;P

Just have a look at 3DMark06, a dual core processor is extremely better in the cpu test than a single core, and more games are going to be multi-threaded/

3DMark06 already utilizes the dual core procxessors. The_Other_One said that he's not gonna buy one until more programs take advantage of them.

*nods* Oh I use premiere a good bit which utilizes duel processors, but I have yet to find any progoram where I NEED duel processors. Once it's more mainstream, I'll consider it. But just as with SLI, I feel it's a waste for something I won't really ever use...

I don't think getting a higher score in a program is a goos us of a dual core processer

Agreed. This applies even more to the common computer user. How many home users use programs that can take advantage of dual core? Even less home users run programs that NEED it. Dual core video cards seem alot more beneficial than dual core processors.

Agreed as well... I don't care for SLI either, but it is certinally very useful for those people who wish to go beyond your normal user specs

Another point, which I don't know how this applies to duel core, but with SLI or a standard duel processor setup, what do you notice about speed? The common user would think it would be faster, when in fact, it's SLOWER untill you truly utilize the two processors. SLI scores will usally slow this when you run at lower resolutions, but I guess if you're using SLI you wouldn't be running at low resolutions

Either way, I'm just making a point

well, dual core is a different type of performance increase... it only really increases something that uses a lot of processing power... and theres is still one bus speed such as 2ghz or 3ghz.
as i understand it intel has gotten pentium d up to 3.4ghz 65nm, and AMD has gotten athlon 64 X2 up to 2.6ghz (still 90nm, athlon 64 FX-60 dual core)
edit: sorry i believe the pentium d has gotten up to 3.46ghz, as well as a 3.4ghz pentium d
