Default Download Speed

I have a cable modem connection that when I test it on CNET's Bandwidth meter and other meters clocks at 300 or more kb/s, but when I try to download something, it only downloads at about 40 kb/s. Why is that and is there any way I can speed up the downloads? Thanks.

300Kbps / 8 = 37.5KBps.

Which means that your internet speed it 300 Kilobits per second, and you divide that by 8 to get your download speed. So a 300Kbps internet connection means that you will download at around 35-40KBps.

Kbps - Kilobits per second
KBps - Kilobytes per second

Is it actully exactly 8? My friend has 4Mbps cablewhich would be around 4000/8=500 but he gets 700KBps off my website/server.

edit:Actully lets put it this was he "thinks" he has 4mbps cable, he also makes a claim he OCed his CPU using 40v...
