Default Laptop HD into an mp3 player?

Not sure where to put this thread, so I'll put it here.
I have a 40 gig hard drive from a laptop I once had, and was wondering if it could be changed into an mp3 player. Maybe you know of a site where this has been done and/or where to get the other components that are needed.

depends on the player I'm sure, I'm planning on taking the hard drive out of my old broken mp3 player and seeing if I can hook it up in my desktop with a 3.5 to 2.5 converter, but this one was like 2001 time frame, it was a rio riot if you feel like googling it. I think your biggest problem will be installing the firmware to run the player

Can you not buy an mp3 player without the hard drive? Thats really what I'm after, something to stick on the hard drive to make it an mp3 player, without buying a fully-working mp3 player.

so you mean just the program that controls it or something? All mp3 players have some sort of mempry, whether it is flash or a hard drive depends on the model, but every player has some sort of software installed to make it play, which would be stored in the memory
