I've never had any problems from my old compaqs, though I think they went downhill after HP bought them.

For what they are profiled for and what you're getting, nothing.

Processor speed and HDD size isn't all that counts.

For a custom PC, you're concerned about ALL corners of performance. Not just "GHz".

With a Compaq, you're getting a cheap motherboard that is virtually featureless, no overclocking, no tweaking, nothing. You're also probably gettin integrated video, which means no gaming or good multimedia support. If they do specify a specific graphics card, it is again probably featureless and un-tweakable.
HDD is probably an off-brand, only meant for large capacity and not speed.
RAM is going to be off-brand, again, only meant for capacity. Timings are going to be crap, bandwidth is going to be crap.
Case and PSU are going to look semi-decent on the outside at best. Case quality is OK, but PSU quality is terrible. Low amps, bad cooling, probably short life.
Etc.

Wth a custom PC, you get more opportunity for flexibility in tweaking, overclocking, etc. Every piece of the computer is going to be high quality (assuming you buy the right parts lol).

None of that matters though if you just want an internet capable, e-mail, AIM, school/work, based computer. A simple Compaq/HP Desktop with a warranty will suit you fine if that's all you need.
(I'm on a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop right now )

Then again when you buy a compaq or any oem really you're not paying for performance (whether you get it or not), youre paying for the convenience and warranty
