dell 1150 power thing not working

hi
i have a dell inspiron 1150 and after 6,7 months of purchasing it the power adapter and the power socket has given me trouble. first the power adapter ripped. and after buying a new one for $60 whenever i plug the power adapter in the socket nothiing happens. i dont no what to do so i thought i ask u guys before going to a computer repair store or dell and pay like $100 /$200 to get it fixed.

"Nothing happens"- but does it even light up like it's charging or powering on? If it doesn't light up, then it may be a faulty adapter.
