Default XP freezing

Hi, my XP system is freezing up on me, and getting slower too.
The error i'm getting is 7016.
Seems to have started after i downloaded a few songs off bearshare.
I've cleaned temp. files through control panel/system maint., but it hasn't fixed the problem.
any suggestions?
Thanks!

If you got it after downloading songs the first thing to do would be to run AdAware or a similar program to check for spyware and other crap. Spyware will indeed slow up your computer and generally mess things up. Once i lost my internet connection due to spyware.

As far as the error message goes i can tell you this, the error your getting is:
ERROR_CTX_MODEM_RESPONSE_VOICE
7016 Voice detected at remote site on callback.

If spyware is the cause it should be a breeze. On the other hand if removing spyware doesnt help (assuming spyware is the cause) it may have triggered some bad configurations so the problem may be deeper in your system. It is indeed a system error, but if its not connected to the downloads, spyware or similar, then im not quite certain how to fix it yet. Some others might. So clean for spyware first, and report back if it doesnt help. You might have to run AdAware more than once, as some spyware is annoyingly persistent.

IF you dont use Dial up it is probably a Dial program. Anyway Go write a message in the Adaware Section. They know what they are talking about in there... We just BS our way through it.

Thanks for the reply!
I downloaded the AdAware, and it seemed to help quite a bit.
My system is now running quicker, but it does still freeze on occasion.
Not as often as before, which makes me think that the spyware was the problem.
I'm thinking i'll take your advice an keep running the AdAware and hope it'll fix the problem for good.

Good good! But the system still aint supposed to occasionly freeze. What about the error, do u still see it?
And by running AdAware more than once i meant running it straight after the previous scan, like runrunrun, as some spyware might be difficult to remove and needs further persuasion. But still as you say, you should continue using it on a regular basis, like every two weeks or something.

also try downloading avg free edition or antivir
they are both free antivirus programs
for a firewall i recommend zonealarm free edition
you should try scanning for both viruses and spyware/adware
make sure you keep the programs up to date with the latest list of bugs

"What about the error, do u still see it?"

Ya, it's still showing up.

-------------------------------

"And by running AdAware more than once i meant running it straight after the previous scan, like runrunrun, as some spyware might be difficult to remove and needs further persuasion."

I'll try that, run it continuously a few times. Combining the first 3 scans, it quarantined 600 files, and removed 700. On the 4th, it quarantined 5 files and removed 9. I guess it's working.

----------------------------------

"also try downloading avg free edition or antivir

Right now i'm using PC-cillin for my antivirus. It came with my computer, and does routine auto scans. It says it's to expire soon, so maybe i'll try dowloading your recommendations, since their free.

----------------------------------

"dont use bearshare. limewire instead. same thing, but its much prefered."

Thanks, i'll give that a try.

"As far as the error message goes i can tell you this, the error your getting is:

Thanks for your help!

Spyware is not always the problem for slow speeds tho.
Sometimes you remove spyware and you wont kill the actual process. Few things you should REALLY look into is Registery Cleaners...also Wintask 5 to stop pointless processes from booting up.
GOOGLE every .exe before you turn it off tho so you knwo what it does. It might be important.

I dunno what the link policy is but here are several registery cleaners that I use/used.
