Default Weird iPod issue

My friend's iPod Mini is having a very weird issue. It works fine AFAICT with the hold switch set, yet immediately turns off when the hold is released, often displaying a line across the screen. Any ideas as to what is going on and how it can be fixed?

Try Connecting it to the computer while being on hold, and update it

ok well when u turn it on, try placing your hear to the back of the ipod and listening for any odd noises.

maybe something loose or something scratching, it might be a problem with the hdd.
