Question How To: Online Radio?

Hey I'm just curious how to go about setting up an online radio station, what's involved and how much it costs to do this and run it?

I'm in New Zealand BTW.

Cheers people.

Get WINAMP, and then download Shoutcast.....you can set up a free online radio...and people who visit the shoutcast site, and see your radio station might go into it and check it out....Make your radio station stand out from the rest

I wouldent advise you do that... things like shoutcast and jetcast are not suitible for streaming audia/video to people you dont know because they are basically connecting DIRECTLY to your computer/hard drive using those kinds of software. (and it gets around ur firewall if you have given that program access rights to the internet.)

Also, software like that is limited to ur internet (upload) bandwidth. if u have some audio at 20Kbps (20Kbps is fairly low quality) and you have an upload speed for 33k (like on a 56K modem) then you can only have 1 person listening to ur radio. (You can calculate this by taking the upload bandwidth divided by the bit rate of the audio)

If you want more people to be able to listen to ur online radio then get a server (they are quite expensive, if you dont have the funds then find a friend who does and ask if they can upload it to their server for you. Or you can try a free or evaluation server here.

lol, yeah its goood for 'practice'

But the last time i used jetcast someone hacked my registry. Luckily windows makes its own back-up now and again. At least i was able to get the MoFo's IP address before i got the critical error message.

Its all good now though, after windows recovered itself i just rolled back the settings and everything was normal...

Make sure you dont list your online radio in the shoutcast directory so you dont get any idiots trying to hack ur computer.

Oh yeah, and we've forgotten to give you some links to where you can get the software for the online radio.

You can get Jetcast Here .................... (Jetcast is part of Jetaudio)

You can get shoutcast here

Hope this helps.
