Default Reading old cassette data tapes

Does anyone know how to extract data from audio cassette tapes used by old home computers such as BBC, TI99, etc. A friend has a set of tapes used on a "Digi-Music" machine which held music data in digital form on audio tapes. We want to extract the data into a PC and, hopefully, convert it to MIDI to play the tunes. These systems used audio tones to represent digital binary data, but I have no idea how to interpret the tones if I play them back into a sound card. Any ideas ?? Should I post this in the hardware forum? This is the first time I've used this forum.
Thanks,
Musicanic
