And battery life? Does it need to be very good? At that range, you probably would only be able to afford say a sempron or celeron... Semprons are very good but the battery life isnt the best.

as far as i gather it will just be wordprocessing , spreadsheets with cd rw n dvd reader. must be resonable fast n reliable . with a decent amount of battery. dont think she'll be needing it for videos much ,but may b a bit of music.

You could probably find a laptop like I have, an Averatec 3270, for fairly cheap. If 2 to 3 hours of battery life is ok, this is a nice little laptop. 12", so it's rather small, it does great for typing. The video card sucks, but it'll play videos just fine, just no gamming. The processor is plenty fast just for normal stuff, I normally underclock mine to 800MHz to save battery and it's really not even noticeable. It has a DVDRW in it too, which is really nice for this price range, and a 60 to 80G harddrive, which is also great for the price.
Newegg had one for $700 I beleive, but there are probably cheaper ones around as this particular model was recently replaced with a slightly newer model(Sempron 3000 rather than 2800, new case) |

Well for £500, I'm sure you can just about get any basic computer since a DVD/CD-RW is just about standard on most laptops nowadays. Some affordables you might find in your area are HP/Compaq, Acer, and Toshiba.

I think any ACer would work....they hav enough power n are less expensive, and they hav a very very good quality. best value for money..hp/compaq are a waste of money for me. DEll is also an option but last one
