It could be the result of a number of things. lately with a system seeing overheating problems due to a failing bios chipset also included memory errors on memory known to be spotless. Windows locking up would be seen more frequently there however with a known hardware problem.

An overheating issue can be seen when a stock heat sink/fan combination seeing the original thermal pad(preformed thermal compound) letting go will cause locks at times as well as faults developing with the physical memory itself. These along with an instability with the board or power supply can see problems like this. What will be needed here is some information on the system itself like make and model board, cpu, memory, video and sound, etc. in order to determine what is causing this to be seen.
