DVD writing speed problem

Hey guys, i'm running a lite on dvd writer which is capable of burning at 8x speed. According to nero, a dvd (4 gig ish) should take under 15 minutes to complete. Why then, when the drive is set to maximum speed (8x), does it take around 45 minutes to burn the disk? The disks are labelled 8x too, so this is not the problem. I have also tried different brands of disks to no avail. Standard CD's also take much longer than nero's predicted time to burn, so this problem is not limited to dvd media. I'm running windows 2000 professional, and the laest version of nero. Processor is 2.8 P4 and i have 512 DDR RAM. This seems more than adequate to allow me to burn at full speed. Suggestions please - thanks in advance!

What's more important is that a standard DVD would burn for 2 hours at normal speed, I believe. At 8x this should still be 15 minutes, though. Make sure that there are no other programs running, as this can slow the performance of the burning time...

EDIT: Whoops! I thought you were saying a 4x it was saying it should 15 minutes... Anyway, previous comments stands for the time being (about other programs running).

nah mate, i've tried it fresh after booting up with nothing else running. Anything else that could be going wrong? hardware connections wise maybe?

Might sound dumb, but make sure you have DMA (Direct Memory Access) activated for your IDE controller. Otherwise you'll be putting all the data through the CPU instead of bypassing it. Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Expand, then click Properties, then Primary and Secondary tabs, making sure in Advanced Settings, the Transfer Mode clearly states DMA if available. (Whew!) DMA mode 2 should be the minimum for a burner.

haha, cant believe that was the problem! Totally overlooked it, cause windows usually sets "DMA if available" as the default option. DUH!. Cheers man, glad you suggested it or i'd still be trying out different software configurations. Plant
