Headset that works with Soundcard?

Before I got my M-AUDIO 9900 I could just plug in my USB headset on my onboard sound and it would work. What I mean is that the audio for my game would come out of my speakers and the audio for my Ventrilo would come out of the headset and I could talk.

After I installed my sound card and tried using my headset it does not work the way it does before. I've broken that USB headset since it has happen and going to be ordering a new one.

My question is: What Headset do I need for things to work as it did before I got the sound card.

I'm looking in the $40 and under range so if people could point me in the right direction for a good/affordable headset that works with my sound card that would be great!
