Well, you can disable startup and shutdown sounds under the Sounds and Audio Devices section in the Control Panel. That will mean that you will hear nothing (which is what you wanted right?).

Go to:
C:\WINDOWS\Media There are two files, named: Windows XP Logon Windows XP Logoff Just change the names, for example: Windows XP Logon off Windows XP Logon off Then when it goes to load the file, its not there and just doesnt play. You can also put .WAV's in that folder and name it "Windows XP Logon" and have custom start up sounds.
