Default Upgrading RAM

Just bought a new pc, and it only has 256mb RAM, I found this on the packard bell website

System Memory
Four 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMM sockets.
Serial Presence Detect
Support for single-sided or double-sided DIMMs (DDR 333 / DDR400)
Support for up to 4 GB system memory
Non-ECC RAM (ECC memory will run in non-ECC mode)
Single and dual channel mode operation:
Single channel mode with single DIMM, non-symmetrical population or non-identical DIMMs
Dual channel mode with 2 or 4 identical DIMMs, populated symmetrically

Can anybody tell me what it means, and give suggestions on what RAM to buy, because I cant make head or tail from it.

go on newegg.com, go to the system memory and search for DDR memory, I would suggest kingston, corsair, ocz, or patriot, but there's other good brands too. Basically any of these will work http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...47&Order=price but you want to try to match the speed of the one in your computer or the ram will run slower than what it could, so narrowing it down, I think these would be good options http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ice=&maxPrice=, and I would suggest getting a 512 for a total of 768 I believe.

What is the budget going to be, and do you want to overclock (I'd assume not from the question, but just asking...)?

best overclocking and most expensive for me would be the crucial ballistix 2x1GB kit. otherwise, go with some OCZ for some nice timings and a decent overclock. go with 1x2GB kit whatever you get..crosiar is good too...

Ehh, it's hard to say what would be the best OC kit, as each individually manufactured kit OCs differently, and up in that price and performance range you won't be able to tell much of a difference between all the big performance RAM companies. Crucial Ballistix is some really nice RAM though.
