Unhappy XP Boot Issues

Hello all. Sorry to bother you, but I have a unique booting problem with Windows XP Home Edition.
Alright, so I installed windows fine. Everything worked great, boot up took no more than 25 seconds. I added more programs over the next 2 hours or so, including service pack 2, as the disk I have only has the original XP. Everything still worked great. Now, I installed AOL Safety and Security Center. Now problems begin to show up. Now, it takes two minutes to boot up compared to the recent 25-30 second boot. My computer began to crash and freeze repeatedly during startup and shutdown, and when opening programs. I ran my System Mechanic 6 program, and 260 errors were removed from the registry. It also showed that a error was located on my hard drive, but it was unable to fix it. So, my computer began to be stable again, but very slow at bootup.
I downloaded a program called SpeedBoost 2004! to improve my loading time. It helped vastly, but now my computer has errors at every boot up, such as "file not found." I have tried uninstalling the AOL virus software, but my computer was still slow to boot up. I even reinstalled windows, which is where this article begins. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does the disk error that showed up before mean I need a new hard drive? Would that solve my problem? Thanks again.

System Specs:
Asus P5ND2-SLI
Pentium D 930 overclocked to 3.45 GHz
nVidia 7800 GT
512 MB RAM

Have you tried a repair since you uninstalled AOL safety and security?

If you want to boot from the disk, hit enter to install Windows, and after Windows detects a previous installation, choose to repair it. That may help. Myabe run checkdisk before you run it from a boot disk.

it sounds like registry mechanic and SpeedBoost 2004 have caused all your problems to me, i would just reinstall everything again and try not too mess with the registry, or use SpeedBoost, as those are the kind of things that can easily destroy your computer, but can work wonders with the right skills and knowledge

I'd try a system restore. Restore your computer to an earlier time when this problem didn't happen...like 2 days ago....

To do so, go to Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System restore

Click on, restore your computer to an earlier time, and set it back a day or two...or three..(whenever it is you did this). Click on the day, and on the right there will be a list of restore points. If you say all this happened after the AOL thing, then see if the AOL thing is on the list...if not...just go to the closest time back...

Good Luck, hope that helped...

Depending on how many programs you added from the fresh install, you can see a massive increase in boot times, trust me. I have about 75 processes running from startup in total, and it takes me probably over two minutes for my computer to stop hard disk and cpu activity, and my computer wouldn't be considered slow by any means.

If this is a newly built computer, it may be an idea (when you get a working installation), to run stress tests on your memory and cpu, just to make sure they're working alright. Let us know if you're not sure how to do that.

Thanks for all of your help. Amazingly, I got it to work after fiddling with some of the boot up settings, and turning off some of the boot programs. Now my computer can boot in a relatively fast 45 seconds. And no more errors or freezes! Thanks again for your help.
