Right now, I'm really interested in trying USA. I heard it's really nice to study there. But I have my worries, since I never had any western buddies (except my college professor).
Wow, it must be pretty cool to have studied all throughout the world. I spent a few months in Europe and the Middle East in the early '90's and would have loved to spend more time, let alone live and go to school, in different parts of the world. I think it would have given me a better understanding of other cultures and how their daily lives and minset on various issues differ from mine.

In the United States, you will come to find out that from state to state the culture and lifestyle differs greatly. Even within the same state, lifestyles are incredibly different. From the farms and vineyards in Northern California to the plentiful beaches in Southern California, our lives are very different.

From your first post you say you might be going to Alabama. I have no idea how people in Alabama live their life today. I know how things were during the civil rights movement in the 60's but I truly do not know how people live their lives today in Alabama.

I have spent extensive time in the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio area and of course in Southern California.

I can tell you that not everyone surfs in California. When I lived on the east coast last summer, that was the first question everyone asked. (and to indulge their stereotype, I have tried surfing and found I am better at body boarding.. ) I think you will find that even with all of the regional differences there is a majority of America who loves this country and will do whatever it takes to keep our freedoms alive. There is a sense of unity and patriotism that sometimes gets shoved under the rug, but still exists. For the most part we raise our children to grow up proud of being US citizens but try and show that we, as a country, are not perfect.

Enjoy your stay in the western world and take advantage of learning our cultures. You will realize that most of us are not as bad as the Islamic terrorists portray us to be. With all of our mistakes, and there are plenty, we at least strive to live up to our unalienable rights

I've been to California(and other beaches) but I certinally can't surf! I've also been to Europe, but as with most people, I live in the states.
