Your laptop would need a GPS receiver.. they usually are USB.
You would not need a router for internet on your laptop. You would need a Wireless card... AND be in the proximity of someone hosting a connection. YOU DONT need the wireless router or the internet connection for the GPS to work.

You can get a laptop with built-in wifi or cell connection. I believe some cell phone providers offer wlan cards for anywhere access. Such as, the EV-DO service now offered. Some that are taking advantage of the this are the Levono, Dell, and Panasonic through Cingular. Lenovo, Dell and HP are incorporating CDMA 1X EV-DO technologies- those are with Verizon and Sprint.

Ahhh it is much easier than that! Just get the data cabe from your local Cell store. I know nokia has free software to configure your phone from your PC once it is connected via the USB data cable. Then the wireless pone is is your modem... i have it setup on mine.
but the great thing is I dial into my own computer, and use my own badwidth (still slow as dial up)...

If you want internet when your driving, you would need to have it via cell. But those speeds are slow and only are available in some areas.

Well supposedly it'll be at broadband speeds. I think the EV-DO is supposed to be rated at 400-700 Kbps. It's supposed to work whenever there's a cell connection. Hopefully that's true, it's just that I hardly get any full bars at home or work. So it should be good when you're outdoors.
