Default xp wont boot with usb drive on

When I have my usb externel drive on and turn on my computer, it wont boot . It just hangs and I can't even use "del" to enter setup. When I turn my usb drive of and switch my pc on it works fine. Then I have to switch on the usb drive and it works fine. I must mention that for the moment I still have 1.1 usb ports and the drive requires the faster 2.0 usb port. But is that the reason XP wont boot when the usb external drive is switched on at startup? Or is there something else I can/must do?

Hangs during post? My dad's machine does that with his USB flash reader. My old Abit wouldn't when I had my external floppy connected. It's probably a flaw in the BIOS... You could try flashing the bios, but the safest thing would be to deal with it.
