I have two Kicker 12" Subs, an Audiobahn Amp and a MA Audio Capacitor. I also have a JVC head unit. I would like to add some component speakers, I have been looking at some MB Quart component speakers....
I think Beyond's question is a very good one. Also, The_Other_One is right on about the enclosure. Each type of enclosure provides a different kind of low sound.. The conventional types are sealed enclosures which can control the sound more and deliver a deeper bass and then there is a vented/ported enclosure which is louder and more forceful (rock, heavy metal...) As [-OMEGA-] said, take a look at crutchfield. They are a bit over priced but their learning center and hands-on-research is very thorough. ...also, the direction you of the box plays a part in how the subs sound...

I really like infinity's home audio speakers and subs. I was not to thrilled with a Kappa series sub I listened to.. but they do make very good home and car audio products..

First off, if you do your homework and build the system right, you don't need Caps. Caps are how you force a substandard system into pumping out more power.
As for brands? Infinity are nice but a little over priced IMHO. I personally think that in terms of subs JL audio is the way to go. The Alpine R type are also really nice. My suggestion is to get a CD of the music you like and go to an audio shop to listen to the subs. Feel free to play around with the settings, as most of the places I've been to could not tune a sub worth crap. Either that or their cheaper subs were severly out of tune to make them sound horrible so they could push the expensive stuff.
