A friend of mine has this setup ---
1.) Internet comes from a combo cable modem/wireless router -- The Scientific Atlanta WebSTAR (piece of junk if you ask me) 2.) The first computer (Dell Dimension 2400) is connected via a CAT5 cable and obviously the internet works fine. 3.) The second computer is a Dell SmartStep 100D that connects (or... did connect...) with a Netgear USB wireless dongle. Just recently the copy of Windows on it finally kicked the can and he reinstalled (Yes, he used the original Dell disc that came with the computer) Windows XP. Now he can't get the Netgear dongle to work correctly with the Webstar. Now i'm usually very good with networking but this one has me stumped. All of the WEP keys and everything match with the WebSTAR, and Windows reports "Connection quality is Good". However the internet will not work. Pages will not load with a server not found error and IM software cannot connect. I told him, as a last resort, to try the Windows 'repair' option. It throws the error "IP address cannot be renewed". From my knowledge this means that the WebSTAR is not giving the Smartstep a IP address, and Windows network properties says "Invalid IP address". Anyone have any ideas? Make sure you have the correct drivers for the card in the computer. Make sure there is an available IP in the pool assigned by the router...
