Windows vs. Linux vs. FreeBSD Performance

I currently triboot three operating systems: Windows XP Pro, (Mandriva) Linux, and (Free)BSD.

I realize that they all have their pros and their cons, but I want to switch to one (possibly two) exclusively.

Anyway, it's looking more and more like Windows might be a permanent resident on my hard drive, and that that will be less and less of a nasty thing.

My question is, why does XP Pro performance degrade so quickly after installation? My Linux and BSD run as fast now as when I installed them 2 years ago, but I have to reinstall Windows at least once a year to maintain decent performance. Yes, I know about viruses, spyware, and whatnot. I run Panda Antivirus, Tiny Personal Firewall, and Spyware Doctor/Spybot/AdAware constantly. That's not the issue. I even clean the registry once in a while. I automatically defrag with Diskeeper 10. Still, it just decides to crawl. Why?

The first thing to look at is all of the programs that run at startup. Also take a look at the services that run in the background. The number of programs and services can contribute to slowness.

two big things that really hurt the performance of windows are #1 the whole registry thing that loads every time you startup and #2 the fact that windows will fragment files. SO if you clean your registry and defrag fairly often, it helps keep these things in check, though still doesn't totally alleviate the problem. But I still use WIndows cause it's the accepted standard for the most part for personal computing

I'm talking not touching the startup, and it still gets slower. (Yes, I know how to check, and there's nothing new.)

I know. Why they went to a master registry eludes me, especially considering they use it with a non-fault-tolerant file system. I have Diskeeper 10 Premier Pro for fragging those fragments. And, Windows isn't the standard for me. If they made Windows with a root account, I might stick to it.

Yep. Seen it. LOL... I love FreeBSD, but I wish it was easier to use. I'd switch to it BUT it won't work with my Wifi or BT adaptors.
