Default GeForce fx5500 install- 'cannot display this video mode'

I have Dim2350, p4, 1.8ghz, 750MB ram, integrated graphics,
LCD monitor 1504fp. WinXP.
I bought the FX5500, 256MB, for PCI slot.
Disabled the on-board graphics.
BIOS (vers A00) menus do not have option to set 'auto' or 'pci' for video.
Installed new card in PCI slot. Plugged monitor into new port.
Switch on. Get black screen with "cannot display this video mode".
Cannot go any further to boot up and load new drivers from CD.
So I plug monitor back in integrated port and boot up.
Get the weird looking Windows screen, due to graphics disabled, but its usable.
Device manager shows the FX5500 is recognized, enabled and working properly.
When I switch monitor back to FX5500 port keep getting message
'cannot display this video mode'
Other notices say this card should be OK for the 2350 but I'm thinking my
monitor cant handle it.
When I disable the FX5500 and enable the on-board graphics I can revert back to normal as before.
Any ideas????
thanks.
