I'm going to disagree with Encore and his chart. It is logical that a pattern would continue, but, that doesn't mean it will. PC users may stick with 2GBs for the next three years. Some genius may come up with a way to use less RAM, and we could revert to 1GB. Who knows?

As mentioned before, RAM is not the only factor in the equation. Better HDDs, better processors and better technology is developed every day. Who's to say that RAM doesn't just become soldered directly onto the motherboard again? (Slim, slim, slim chance.)

There isn't any defined answer. The only answers go straight back to "What if?" So please, give it up. My advice is for this guy to buy either 1GB for standard PC use, or 2GBs for gaming. If he needs 4GBs, he'll buy it. If he never does, he won't.

That's my 2 cents.
