can i find out without opening up my case?

Download CPU Z - http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Once you do, you will see an SPD tab and under it, you will see the manufacturer and name of your RAM...as well as speeds, timings etc.

CPU-Z will tell you, along with many programs mentioned in Questions 101
