Question Simple questions regarding my new Desktop PC

Hi folks,

I've had laptops as desktop replacement for years, but as my business grows I've now also purchased a new simple Desktop PC.

There are a few questions that came up over the last few days, maybe someone can help me with this:
  • When I put my PC in standby the monitor and the harddrive seem to turn off, but the actuall CPU- and/or powersupply-fan are still running. Can someone tell me how I can turn my PC into a proper sleeping mode that will turn off the whole system properly while on stand-by? That's the way it works with my laptops anyway...
  • I've got a pretty cheap wireless PCI adapter from Gigabyte in the new PC. The reception in my room is usually pretty bad anyway, but my Joybook laptop is sitting on the table and receives therefore usually a reasonably good signal. The signal strength on my desktop shows "weak" and also drops out every now and then.
Now, the internet speed is much much slower than on my laptop (although using 802.11g). My question: is it possible that those to computers interfere with each other and slow each other down? They sit right next to each other. And: Can a weak connection cause slower speed? (Maybe I should buy a better PCI adapter from DLink or Belkin!??)
BTW: The statistics of the Gigabyte card show a lot of CRC frame errors. What does that mean?

I'd really appreciate your help.
Thanks!

Kai

First off, it sounds like on your laptop you're putting it into hybernation which writes everything in the ram to the hard drive and shuts it completely off, but you can bring it back up very quickly. Try enabling and using that on your desktop. Also on the wireless issue, try getting an extension antinna, it will screw on where the standard antinna is and then you can set on to of your computer for better reception, that may save you some money before you go out and buy a whole new card.

thanks for that!

I've already checked on my notebook but the hypernation mode is switched off. Could that be some BIOS setting? I will see how the hypernation mode works on my desktop. Somewhere I've heard using hypernation is not recommended for some reason. But if there is no other way...

Would this be the right antenna?

My major question would be: could I see an improvement in the speed once I have a better reception or does this just give me a better consistency?

Thanks again!

Yeah, that looks like the right antenna. By getting better reception it should improve both your bandwidth, and your speed on the internet. If in the end you do decide to get a new card, don't get a Belkin. They're cheap, and have multiple other issues with them, a Linksys, D-Link or Netgear would be the way to go.

P.S. It's nice to find someone with the same name .
