Setting up router of College internet Connection

I've been having this problem for a bit. I talked to resnet and they told me i can use a router... no big deal... thats ok .I have a Linksys 2.4 GHZ 802.11b router with 4 port switch (enthernet wireless AP + Cable/DSL Router) and when i put the settings on auto in the settings for the router it dones not detect my connection and the setup cd cant find my connection either... is this the wrong router? can somebody help me?
