Hello I am considering getting a dvd player that has a hard drive capable of saving audio and video from the tv directly to its hard drive. Do I need something like tivo or some other subscription inorder for these things to work properly. I have directtv. Could you please explain why. Thanks alot.

sounds like a pvr... personal video recorder. i have no experience with these things, but my guess would be that they're just like vcr's. i'd check with the salesperson and the manual though. products tend to differ from each other in how they run and what they need. i'm sure there's some that use tivo to get accurate times for shows... some that are set just like a vcr. just make sure you hook it up correctly.

You can get a TV Tuner on your computer, most of them (if not all of them) can record TV shows directly on your hard drive.
