Depends what mail server you're using. Hotmail? Yahoo? Gmail?

I don't beleive you can use Thunderbird with anything other than POP3 services... I don't beleive any free services offer that. Well, Yahoo does, but I beleive it costs money

For instance, if your ISP is acme.com:
Incoming server: pop.acme.com
Outgoing server: smtp.acme.com
Simple as that

When i had it...

I checked Gmail, Hotmail, and my Dotster.com accounts all at once. Not sure if Hotmail allows it anymore though.
