Default motherboard not reconizing hard drives

i have a old motherboard that sometimes has issues with reconizing my hard drive, normally i can get it working within a few minutes but now i cant seem to get it to work. i have two hard drives and a cd-rom drive the computer always reconizes the cd-rom but not the hard drives. i have tryed switching around the hard drives with master-slave, primary-secondary tryed new ide cables that i knew worked still nothing. i know that the hard drives work because i have a external enclosure so i poped that on one of my computers that worked and it reconized both hard drives. anyone that knows anything about old crappy computers please help me.
