Default Internet Explorer 6 not functioning

I have IE 6.0 from XP service Pack 2 on my new PC. The other day something happened which led to IE showing the classic "The page cannot be displayed" screen on anything entered. I have to get around this by opening up "My Computer" and typing a URL in directly there!

I think they both share the same settings accessed via TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS - so why does one work and not the other?

I've tried re-installing IE from the XP discs but it hasn't helped. What's the next step as its very frustrating.

Matt

Internet Explorer is a very unstable browser IMO compared to Mozilla Firefox, and if i understand your question, when firefox opens it will ask you if you want to use it as your defult browser... if you press yes it will become teh defult browser... the majority of ppl on CF use mozlla firefox because it is fast, secure, stable, and basic to use

OK - it's not bad - but it doesn't seem to be very good with plugins - eg Media Player. I've installed Windows Media Player 10 again - and Firefox isn't finding it.
