How do wireless routers work?

I want to buy one for my laptop so I can take my laptop anywhere with me in my house but I was reading about it and it says I have to have a cable modem and something about ethernet but I don't want anything plugged into my laptop. Is this true?

you will need dsl... which plugs into the phone jack...

You can get cable (which comes thrugh the tv cable), and plug the modem into the router that way.

I'm getting satellite internet or wi-fi or whatever it's called. Do I need a router for that?

you only need a router if you have more than 2 computers or wireless broadband.
