Hey Guys,
I was wondering if anyone could persuade me to defragment my drive. I was told it was a good thing to do (like house keeping kind of) but what does it ACTUALLY do to my computer, and how much faster will it make it run if I really I don't think ever have done it. Thanks. Sincerely, Alex |

you should defrag probably monthly, windows has this nasty habit of saving files in little pieces, but then when it needs to find them again it has to find each piece individually and stick them back together, when you defrag it takes all those fragmented files and puts them together (what OS's like linux do to begin with but anyways...) thus reducing your seek time. It really starts to hurt performance if you get more than like 20-30% of your files fragmented

When you load up Windows Defragmenter, it gives you the option to analyze the hard drive. This'll tell you how much is fragmented
