Default Wireless internet at home. please help!

Hello all!

Bought a laptop the other day and I've decided I want to have a wireless network at home. Ok, so let me tell you how I figure things work...

Cable from supplier comes into my modem --> modem connects to router via ethernet --> ethernet sends out wi-fi signal which can then be picked up by my laptop? correct? let me know if im wrong...

My problem is as follows. I have no ethernet card on my desktop computer. My modem can connect to the computer via USB or ethernet, Im using USB obviously. So my question is can I connect the router to the modem via ethernet while having the modem connected to my computer via USB? Or once the router is set up does the desktop computer need to be connected via the router?

I hope that made sense!

Cheers

Ed

I have a wireless network at home and for my desktops I just use a network cable for a wired connection and the laptop has built in wireless.

If you want each computer to be wireless then you would need a wireless pci card for the desktops or an usb wlreless device.

you are correct with your "wireless" definition.
I have a wireless setup also and my internet card comes with a antenna or the ability to send and recieve transmssions from and to the router. the incomming cable is hooked to the modem. The modem is connected to the router by an ethernet cable. That leaves the connection between the router and the computer "WIRELESS". the router should also be classifies as "wireless".
If you have no ethernet card in you system, you will have to purchase a "wireless" card to eliminate the physical connection between the computer and the router. Or based on your e-mail I am chancing that the usb device is a "wireless" device"? In either case if your calling it "wireless" you don't need any physical connection between the router and the computer at all for anyreason.
if you go with an ethernet card you will have to connect by ethernet between the router and the computer. The big advantage of wireless it the ability to be mobile with your laptop. Hop I answered your question.
