Hi,
It appears that I have a blown sound card in a emachine. Someone was doing some work and forced a huge amount of power/volume through the
sound card. Nothing plays in or out. My question is this. Since the sound card
is on the M board and does not appear to come out, can I get a sound card
and place in into one of the open slots on the board? And if so, does the
dead one on the board have to be disabled in any way or will XP just
pick it up when installed? It seems hard to believe that the PC is toast just
because the card is dead. This PC makes a radio program so it is crucial that I know this fast in case a new one has to be bought.

You'll have to do a few things first.
1. Go to device manager and uninstall the drivers from the onboard integrated sound.
2. When you're asked to reboot, go ahead. BUT instead of rebooting Windows, get into your BIOS first to disable the onboard sound chip. Save, exit, reboot.
3. Shut down.
4. Open up your PC and install the sound card of your choice.
5. Boot up, and install the drivers for the sound card.
I've done this and it worked just fine
