Default First Time PC Builder

Well I decided to join this forum because a friend reccomended it to me..he said this was the absolute best place to go if u have questions and need answers or any type of help..although ive heard of this forum before i didnt quite need any help because i was in the ignorant bliss state about computer building...I thought It would be the most arduous and tedious work and was under the presumption for quite a while that an education in the field of computers was required to master the "hard" task of PC building...Now that I know better and have atleast tried to commit a bit of research into it and trying to read a few tutorials I think I just might manage...but no matter what you guys may think im not "totally" computer illiterate

Ok to start things off i need to build a brand new desktop PC...i know u guys know this but just in case..only the tower...no monitors, keyboards, mice, or sound systems required YET.

I am working on a budget of around $600 give or take some the problem im having is that i dont know which computer components are compatible with each other so im probably going to wind up buying totally diff components which are unsupported by my motherboard.

Budget lets say around $600
I KNOW that i want an athlon preferably a dual core x2 not set on which one yet anywhere from 3800+ and on
i have no idea about motherboards and would like the nice members on here to help me build a PC i like around the budget with compatible components lol..
i know i wud like atleast a gig of RAM
around 200 gigs of hard drive
a nice but not EXTREME gamers graphics card
a sound card
and any other things which a normal PC would require that I am not aware of....sorry for the extremely long post I felt like i should atleast explain my situation before I as people for favors

please let me know if i left any neccesary details out or anything that you would like to know

http://computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=37635 this is a good place to start, but you might run into some trouble getting everything you want for that budget. But take a look at that link and it gives some good ideas as far as what to look for on a given budget

Ill edit in about 10-15 minutes with a list. Zipzoomfly is cheaper in some areas, and shipping is free, so it might be good to get your stuff from there.
