Hi, I ordered voip phone service which I had to go out to buy a router to use voip service with my DSL, when I plug my DSL modem into the router, I lose internet connection but the icon doesn't pop up to alert of the disconnected service when the modem is plugged into the router.

Any ideas?

if you know the ip adress of the router you can access it and determine what you should allow and not allow.

Thanks for the reply, how do I find the ip address of the router and is this a common problem with others (router blocking internet access from the modem).

You have to login to the router thru it's gateway and basically configure it. You have to know what type of DSL it is and set it up for that type of DSL. Some routers will configure themselves for cable internet connections but DSL is a different animal.

The other thing you have to keep in mind too is, the router will act as a gateway as well. You may have to disable the DHCP function of the modem (if it's allowed by your ISP, it's called bridge mode) so the router can be your sole DHCP device. It all depends on what type of router it is too.

I tried to confiqure the router by going to 192.168.1.1 in the browser and no luck, then I tried to disable the DHCP which didn't effect the service.

Do they sell any routers that are ready or adapters to bypass a router, all I want to do is use the voip service, I signed a 1 year contract with Verizon.

Maybe it's time to call Geek Squad?

Yeah, you can completely disable all router functions but again, you have to login to the router and disable them in the settings. Then again, in order for VOIP to work, it has to go over an internet connection so therefore, disabling the router functions might put you back at square one.

I suggest calling your ISP or the router manufacturer to find out how to set it up. If you have Verizon DSL which i'm assuming you do, then you would need to set the router up for a PPPOE connection, input your username and password, disable the DHCP functions unless your going to bridge the modem. Verizon uses westell and I can email you some instructions as to how to do that if you want or even use Verizon.

I called Verizon today (yes, I do have Verizon DSL), they told me my modem is alrady in bridge mode. I need to disable DHCP server on the router settings?

Do you think if I buy 327W modem, it will be plug and play?

If you call the manufacturer of your router (from your IP, it sounds like a linksys) they should be able to walk you through the config steps.
