Default Cant see new HDD or install Mobo software

Hi,

I have recently built a new computer and I have installed a new Sempron 2800 CPU a new 80gb Maxtor HDD and a new set of 512mb VS Corsair RAM, i left the existing 10GB HDD which as Windows XP Pro istalled and a old optical drive Cd-rom drive, my problem is I cant see the new HDD in BIOS or windows and the system disc encounteres an error when i try to run it.

The mobo is a K8S-MX

Sounds like you didn't set the jumpers correctly. Most drives tend to come set to Master(single) Be sure the boot drive is set to Master(with slave present) and your new drive set to Slave. Your optical drive should be on the other channel.

This is assuming all your drives are PATA/IDE

Hi again.

I can now see the drive in BIOS and in device manager using windows, the problem is that I can't see the drive in "My computer" it only lists the existing HDD and dosent show the new 80GB volume, however I can select properties>hardware on the existing drive and it tells me that there is two drives.

Why won't the new volume show in "My computer"? anyone know?

Most likely you haven't created a partition on the drive. Right Click on My Computer and select 'Manage' (or go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management). Now select Disk Management. You should be able to create a partition from here, after which you drive should apper in My Computer.
