Default NIC Problems

I was setting up a network on a pc today and found that PC1 is connected from the modem to the pc with USB. I remembered when I first set up my DSL it cound not connect to the internet when installing the modem using the ethernet cable, and the ISP told me to use the USB, it worked , so I left it. I hooked up a linksys wireless router and we all know it uses ethernet not USB, I hooked up the router via ethernet and tried to connect and it failed. I contacted the ISP and they said it had to be the NIC that was bad because the ethernet light on the modem was staying steady and when I used USB it worked ...the pc is only 1 year old HP Pavilion that has never had anything hooked up to the NIC other then the USB cable to modem...
How common is it that the NIC be bad and is there a way to test it at home ? I know they're cheap but I cant figure that new of PC having bad parts.....
If it is the NIC is there a link on how to change this part and compatibility issues for when I go to purchase the NIC?
any ideas would be greatly appreciated..thank you, Steve

PC : Hp Pavilion 515x
Modem: Westell Wire Speed (provided by ISP)
Router: Lynksys BEFW11S4 2.4GHz 802.11b Wireless - B

Well you may be able to uninstall and reinstall the drivers...

Im not sure if the ethernet card is onboard, or in a slot...
Yes things like this could easily have not been working.
