Default What is a good way to Partition on a fresh install?

I was just curious, when you have a large hard drive like 80gb and your installing a fresh copy of an OS on to it, is it better to just format and install the os on the entire partition or would it be better to partition something like 10gb of it to install the OS onto and then have the rest in a different partition for your own files, music, etc...

I have heard this is a good thing to do when your installing a windows server but what about just using XP? Would it make a difference or is there a point? Just curious...
