Default Need Memory Help on Old Laptop

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with 256mb or RAM. I would like to upgrade that, but I am not sure how. I believe that I have two slots, and after searching for a few minutes all I can find is sticks of 512mb, PC2700.

Is this the best that I can install on my laptop?

If so, am I going to be better off removing the 256 and replacing it with the 512 or should I keep them both in there?

Would there be any benefits to putting two sticks of 512 in this computer?

I am not very clear on how compatible different sticks are and I would really appreciate some help here!

the only really important thing is make sure you get the correct kind of ram, like sdram or ddr2 or whatever, next ram runs at the slowest stick's speed so there's no reason to buy a faster stick than what you have now if you leave the 256 in, but if you take it out and put one or two fast sticks in it will help out.

Thanks, that's what I thought from the sticky on RAM, but I just wanted to make sure.
