Default Processor Lock-Up During Printing

My CPU runs at 100% usage while printing (HP DeskJet 693C). Is this normal?

Manually built computer.

System:
ECS EliteGroup
Model: K7S5A
Type: X86-based PC

Processor:
AMD Duron
X86 Family 6 Model 7
Stepping 1 Authentic AMD
1294 MHz
OPN: DHD1300AMT1B

Bios:
Version 1.00

Operating Software:
Windows 2000 Pro

No, that type of behavior is not typical, check the driver versions for any conflict. Did you recently update Windows at all with a security update, and how long have you been using this set-up compared to the length of the problem?

My old HP 632c made my old DEC as well as my present PC run at 100% whenever it was printing. The HP was used with the parallel port on both PCs. I replaced it with a Canon iP1600 (USB interface) and now my processor never goes above 5% when it's in use.

I was also thinking it might have something to do with the parallel interface. (maybe it's time for a new printer )
