Well I am willing to put up with the noise if there are no performance boost, because using $50 just to get rid of the noise feels a little wasteful. Are there any performance boosts as well? My HDD was purchased around 2001-2002, not quite sure but around there.

A new hard drive would likely result in better performance anyway because of how old you current hdd is a newer one would be faster. Just if you keep that drive make sure you back things up regulary because a noise like that could mean that the hdd could die at any time

Get the IDE drive unless you know for certain that your board has SATA ports

Looking at a picture of the board, I dont see any SATA ports....

And reading the specs, only IDE. As hairylee says, get the IDE drive.
