Default USB ports - have to switch back n forth to work

I've got a panasonic dvd camcorder that uses RAM discs. Since I don't have a RAM drive I use the USB to download the movies onto my HD. I'll be able to download maybe 3 disks and then the USB will simply stop recognizing the camcorder as a drive, in other words it doesn't show up in 'my computer' as the D: drive so I can't access the contents. I do the 'safely remove hardware' and then unplug/plug the usb back in, turn off/on the camcorder... every combination I can think of. So, the only thing that works is if I unplug the USB from my computer and then plug it back in into a different USB port, which then brings up the 'found new hardware' and I have to install the driver each time. Any insights as to why this is happening or what I should do about it? Aside from getting a RAM drive Guess that's my next purchase...
